Why should you consider Reading Eggs? According to a 2009 study by the National Assessment of Education Progress (NAEP), education in America was in decline. The Department of Education report cited 4th, 8th, and 12th grade students.
The report concluded that only 34% of fourth graders, one-third [30%] of eighth graders and only 21% of 12th graders evaluated demonstrated science and technology skill levels expected within their correlated grades. Only 3% of all students evaluated displayed advanced proficiency. These results extend from conclusions made as far back as the early and mid 1990’s.
Reading Skills Needed?
The New York Times ran an article titled Decline Found in Reading Proficiency of High School Seniors. This article made public the results of a Department of Education national survey study. That study began in 1992 and concluded in 1994. The New York Times article posted on April, 1995. In the article, the then chairman of the National Assessment Governing Board, William T. Randall, was quoted as saying:
“Our children need more books, not more textbooks but more library books and more books of their own at home so they can develop a lifelong reading habit.”
When you tie these findings in with what Michele Goodwin of The Chronicle of Higher Education stated in a more recent article published on January 2, 2012, the picture doesn’t get any better. This article highlighted the fact that students performed considerably below the defined baseline level of reading proficiency. A level required for an individual to function in everyday life on just a general level.
The article goes on to conclude that U.S. reading scores are more in line with countries like Slovenia and Latvia. A comparison that does not include countries like Canada. In Canada, students are more adept in both math and science. A result of higher reading proficiency levels. Shelving the political rhetoric of the day, please be introduced to a relatively new method. One by which kids ages 3 through 13 years old can learn how to read proficiently.
